How do you pick the best images for product videos?

With Spotboostr it's very easy to create great looking product videos. We do it automatically for you based on a standard product feed from your webshop. However, as much as we'd like to we can't magically make the videos any better than the material we get - most importantly the images in your product feed.

So in this article we will take a closer look at what images works the best when having your product videos made.

Image quality

First step is getting product photos in a high quality. Maybe you can get them from your suppliers but if not - or if they are not good enough, then you have to make them.

If you have the funds to hire a professionel photographer that is the best solution. But we not all have that. Most of us have to make them using whatever equipment and skilles we have.

But do not panic. Even with limited skills and a cheap camera or phone you can make great product photos. In the video blow you will find some great tips and trick to make really good product photos.

For your product video to look the best you should safe your images in a high resolution. Do not compress them too much. The final video will be compressed to secure fast loading.

Focus on the subject

Product videos are often shown in small size - on product pages, in video ads and on mobile phones. Also, your product image in the video only takes up a part of the space. Animated graphics, product information and call-to-actions takes the rest.

So the product photos you use for vide should be focused on the subject - the product. Do not include too mouch space or distracting elements around it.

For your webshop you may include photos from locations, models wearing your cloth or accessoires and such. That is great for the shop but not for the videos. Use the images most focused on the product itself!

Good and bad examples

Even though the cat add some cuteness to the vase and the background add some perspective it won't work well in a video
This is much better. The focus is entirely in the subject. However, the background is still sort of distractive. So lets get rid of that ...

Remove the background

The last step before your create your product video is removing the background from the photo. Product photos with no background work the best.

But how do you do that?

If you have Photoshop skills I am sure you already know how to remove the background from a photo. Save as a transparent png. But if not then what to do?

Lucky for you there are some really easy and cheap online solutions available. One we like is Remove.bg. You can make one image for free every month or sign up for one of the paid solutions.

This is the results we got using the image above. Quite good, right? And it only took a few seconds!
